Infographic: Text book costs are too damn high!

The text book struggle is real. If i had a dollar for every back alley deal that was made to curb the costs of a class that you’d never use in the real world, I’d be rich! I always wondered why they were so high, and this infographic highlights some of the reasons. What text book issues did you have/do you have today?

Generation Mobile – how cell phones shape college students lives

We are all aware of cell phone use in everyday life, but how are cell phones, and smartphones, shaping student lives? You may find some interesting stats from this graphic, detailing mobile use by students. I know cell phone use just started getting heavy when I was in school (Early 2000′s). With the advent of the smartphone, the possibilities now are endless! Think about the apps you can create for study notes, flash cards, lesson plans, all that. I’m sure blackboard should have an app by now too. I’m also sure that many of you have used this tech to swindle a test or three right? *daps* Check the graph below:

Infographic: 8 Myths about Financial Aid

Financial aid for higher education helps many students and families cover the costs to attend college. Believe it or not, even those who are finically capable to pay for college are eligible for financial help. Sound too good to be true? Here are 8 other myths about financial aid:

Financial Aid Myths
Created by: Online Graduate Programs

As someone who took out their fair share of loans, my best advice would be to use your resources. Apply to all types of financial aid and research. I don’t care if Church’s chicken is giving out scholarship money, get that! I definitely didn’t do that and I missed out on a lot of funding. Doesn’t matter if you’re straight out of High School or continuing education either. Get that $$!

The Passion of the #StruggleBerry – end of an error

The Struggle is Real!

October 14th was a monumental day in the history of RIM. It was the day that the iPhone 4s dropped, and was available on all 3 major wireless carriers in the USA. This was significant because many people finally had no more excuse to discard the glorified bricks known as BlackBerrys and upgrade to the next generation. I was one of those people. I didn’t convert until that Monday (Thanks, UPS), but the scene with Blackberry was abysmal. I saw tumbleweeds blow by BBM. My contact lists and recent updates looked like a post apocalyptic dystopian future. Purple BBM blasts rained down from the Internet heavens, as everyone began the mass exodus from the struggleberry. As someone who praised RIM in the past, why did I leave? Glad you asked, I’ll explain below:

The bb clock freeze of death

I used to have a Palm Pre. That phone was ok, but a combination of a parent company who didn’t give a shit about it, coupled with flimsy hardware, made it fail. This phone used to freeze on occasion, and after years with Palm, I was done and wanted to move on to the greener pastures of BBM and RIM. I’ve had this phone for over a year, and I’ve NEVER had a phone that froze as much as this one! The constant battery pulls.  Clicking on an icon and the program takes a year to open. Then there’s the clock (or hourglass depending on which blackberry you own). This display signifies that the phone is working towards a solution, with an unknown completion time. One time, this phone froze for 45 minutes. No gas, forty five MINUTES of straight clock spins! This severely limited and hindered my production. I’ve been in situations where I had to make important calls, and the phone would freeze. No incoming or outgoing calls could get through. All I was left with was a face full of struggle, and a “smart” phone that told me “Uncaught Exception” and #kanyeshrugged!! This is the last thing you want to happen when you’re on a global conference call and you are the meeting organizer! This phone became a liability, and I can no longer coexist in mediocrity.

Purple Messages aka the Broadcast Message

I abhor the purple message as much, if not more than the infinite BB clock. I thought once Facebook converted to condensed email notifications, that I was finally rid of the mass promotion tools of the thirsty. I was wrong, however, because the purple message gave promoters a new lane to tell you about their bottle specials, what’s poppin this weekend, etc. To those who send one a week and avoid spamming, I salute you. To those who don’t, you are no better than the people who STILL send out mass holiday text wishes every year!

Not only am I bombarded with promotion, I get bombarded with chain letters, yes chain fucking letters in 2011! I know the majority of my BBM list is intelligent, so I don’t know why they would send me a purple message saying that smilies would automatically add to my BB if I forwarded that message, or that BBM would work again if I sent along this purple fuckery with a phantom rep #. A quick story: so I got one of these chain messages from a friend. It was one of those “forward this and watch the magic work” type messages. The conversation went like this:

Me: Why are you forwarding this?
Her: I’m just trying to help out and pass the message
Me: Did you fact check this? Did you look this up to see if it was accurate before forwarding?
Her: Nah I just sent it out. Whatever  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Mr Nice Phone

I’m a tech guy. I stay abreast of all the new phones, computers, and anything else under the sun. Speaking objectively, blackberry is below the curve. How are you introducing touch screens years after it became cool?! How have you not addressed the freezing issue, where other smart phone don’t have this issue?! There’s no worse feeling than wanting to surf the net real quick for an answer, looking at your blackberry browser, and shedding a single thug tear, because you know that browser leads to the World Wide Struggle. Then you look over at the Android and iPhone users, and they’re so jovial! Sun in their face, wind blowing through their hair, and the latest Hip Hop party anthem blasting as they click their applications and have an unhindered mobile web experience. I was SICK! Here’s a secret that most people will front about: a lot of Blackberry users know their phone is inferior, but will ride against iPhone because it’s commercial. Android is seen as a cool alternative so you won’t hate on that, but because of the Apple cult-like subculture, people want to rage against the machine. So it’s fashionable to say “fuck an iPhone”, because you don’t want to be seen as a “follower”. I hated because 1) it was easy and 2) my provider didn’t offer the iPhone. All it took was a year of StruggleBerry problems, and for Sprint to get the iPhone for me to join the Dark Side. Blackberry was behind in technological advances, and I was tired of being in the stione ages.

Loss of Reliability
If it was one saving grace that RIM and the Blackberry had, it was reliability. After that huge fiasco with the global network outages, that was the final straw. My voicemail reset for no reason. My emails and texts remained in the queue for hours. Many a business transaction were held up, and this isn’t the first time RIM had a snafu with service! Let’s not even talk about my now suspect battery life! Between all the freezing and data struggles, the battery life evaporates! You could be using a flip phone, but reliability can justify that selection. Now that the reliability rug has been compromised, that placed the final nail in the coffin of my relationship with RIM.

I won’t shit on Blackberry completely like others. The physical keyboard is the best out of any mobile device I’ve ever used. Once you became a pro at typing blindly, there was no turning back! BBM will also be missed. The free messaging service that was GLOBAL! You changed the game, and when eventually RIM offers you as an app on iOS, I will download you expeditiously! Ease of email was also another major win. Your losses outweigh your wins though RIM. You have been late like CNN for too long, and it’s time for the kid to upgrade his life.

RIM, when you sit back and think of all the fails you failed to address with the Blackberry, you will regret it. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow, but soon, and for the rest of your life.

Sprint, Apple, iPhone Nation: I’m coming home!

4 types of Twitter users who piss you off

You need more people!

I love Twitter and social media in general. Well, love is probably a strong word. I like using social media. It helps me to promote this blog and my other projects, to interact with friends, family, readers, celebrities, and the like, and it helps me to get the latest news and gossip from around the world. As someone with a technology background, I appreciate being connected to the world through many different platforms. All things in life have pros, and cons, and Twitter is no different. Some of the people on that site are beyond wack, and starved for attention. Trust me, it’s not everyone, because if it was I wouldn’t use it anymore. However there are certain types of Twitter users who really irk me to no avail:

Twitter Comedians

These are the people who are fake funny. They try super hard to make jokes, showing no regard for taste or decorum. Anytime someone famous dies, they take that opportunity to attempt to type a clever 140 character punchline. These punchlines usually fall flat, and come across as sexist, racist, tasteless, and utterly corny! let me also say here that the way in which people on Twitter joke about death is mind-boggling. I mean, when it comes to celebrities I guess everything is on limits, but people go out of their way to disrespect a life, and that’s just crazy to me! They are the ones who will watch TV or the major awards show with Twitter, and will have something snarky cued up to go with the flow of everyone else. It’s like they have all the “Funny or Die” esque websites bookmarked on their browsers, and they are ready to test their humour. Think about when Will Smith thought he could do stand up comedy like DL Hughley on that episode of Fresh Prince, and bombed like no other, until DL held it down. That’s how some of these fake Twitter stand up comics act.

Twitter Activists

Ever since the #TroyDavis situation, I’ve seen a resurgence in this category of Twitter user. These are the fake revolutionaries, who want to bring change to the world one tweet at a time. They fail to realize, however, that the revolution will not be re-tweeted. Only by utilizing physical and viral activism, can true change occur. We sat here and typed until our fingers bled about Troy Davis’s execution, yet what was truly done? Meanwhile, these #OccupyWallSt Hippies are shutting down lower Manhattan, making people miss trains and disrupting the normalcy of the financial district.

Then, on top of this, they will  inundate your mentions for not paying homage to every political battle or injustice every day of your life. If we comment on Football on Sunday, the latest ratchetness popping off on the tweets, or anything else that brings people joy, they bomb your timeline with tweets like “I guess yall forgot about Troy Davis” and “Dudes talk about Steve Jobs but what about Emmit Till, he died too” and all this other bullshit. You know, I don’t have to tweet about injustices daily to prove that I’m aware and want to make change happen. Life goes on, and I use twitter how I feel. Stop being fake conscious, fake concerned, and fake militant!

Mr Me Too

These users timeline is full of RT’s from other users. They will follow the most popular people on Twitter, and really suck them off with approval. Like they think everything is funny or poignant that comes out of their @’s. They will slash, maim, slaughter, and fatalitize any and all funny sayings or Twitter meme’s that exist. “No Country For” suffered a great demise due to it being run like Olympic track and field, and other sayings aint that different!

If that isn’t bad enough, they blatantly BITE other people’s tweets! I swear, I’ve seen it with my own eyes and I couldn’t believe it. Like, how corny can you be?! You cats seriously make me consider putting copyright signs and trademarks at the end of all my tweets! Be original or be real about your “inspiration”.

The Alter Ego

These are the people on Twitter who are NOTHING like how they are in real life! I’ve met a lot of people on Twitter outside of the Matrix, and I can say that the personalities translate well. A few of you definitely are on your Clark Kent / Superman fleaux. Some of the funniest people are Twitter are introverted in reality. I guess the comfort of interaction with other people from behind a keyboard helps them to channel a more amiable persona. Some people seem super cool and connected, and when you meet them, they are 100% fronting! This works in the opposite way too, because some of the wildest, assholish, Twitter users could be some of the coolest dudes/gals I’ve met for real. This leads to the bigger problem of how technology may hamper our communication skills, but that’s another blog. Just know not to expect a Twitter personality to match who they are in the physical.

I know this won’t change those people from being what they are, and it shouldn’t. Honestly they contribute to the overall Twitter ecosystem. It’s a problem when you front for social media, and end up losing yourself. Don’t front, because more people see it then you may think.

P.S. No @’s, it’s daps all around!

[Synopsis] A Taste Of TrueBlood Episode 48 – And When I Die Season Finale

So… yeah it’s been real hectic round these parts. So hectic, that as I clean out my DVR, I realize that I never did a proper recap of the Season Finale of True Blood!! With so many season Finale’s going on, and the 10th anniversary of 9/11, I got a tad distracted. So I’m gonna touch on some key points that I took away from the episode. To see a proper write up, check out the official HBO synopsis.

They wrapped up the Marnie storyline well. Her tortured soul was finally put to rest. I like how they displayed her anger for always being treated like shit, and how she was able to let go. Looks like Lafayette will keep his power set, as he even communicated with ghost Jesus towards the end.

The ghost of Rene warns Arlene to watch out for Terry and his past. I wonder what revelation or skeletons are in his closet. I know he went nuts from the war but there’s gotta be more to it.

Jason damn near gets his brains beat in by Hoyt when he admits him and Jessica were bonin. One of the funniest scenes in the show was when Hoyt asked how it happened, and Jason went into graphic detail. Jason is country slow, lol, but you gotta love him! It’s crazy that for all that trouble, Jess wants to have a no strings attached relationship. I don’t know what to think about seeing Steve Newlin from the Fellowship of the Sun, who is apparently a vampire now, appearing at Jason’s door!

Sam’s saga seems to be ongoing. He gets the girl, but looks to have more Werewolf problems, as a potential wolf attack awaits him next season. Is this one of Marcus’s pack getting revenge or someone totally different?

Bill and Eric are confronted by Nan, as shes given an order to kill them by the Authority. She’s deciding to go rogue and battle against the AVL and is trying to recruit Bill and Eric. Looks like those two were on the same page, as they didn’t want to be pawns any longer. They Kill Nan and her guards, and are looking to deal with whatever comes next on their own.

Alcide gets a call from a construction site. It looks like the site where Russell Edgington was buried has been raided and Russell is missing! This was a huge revelation, as now the unknown variable of that old and powerful vampire is back in play! Who know’s what will occur.

Sooki chooses to be alone rather than deal with Bill or Eric. I can’t believe how she really controlled this situation. Fairy cooch must be everlasting! We see the most shocking scene of the season. Debbie breaks into Sookies house and attempts to off her with a shotgun. Tara takes a bullet to the dome trying to save Sooki. Sooki, in a fit of range disarms Debbie and blows her head off, and we’re left with Sooki crying over Tara’s fallen body. Tara gone, our homie DEAD!!

Where do we go from here? What will Russell do? What about the fairies?! Who will lead the Shreveport Pack? What is the true motive behind the AVL and the Authority? Who turned Steve? Many Many questions. I can’t wait for next season to have them answered!

Until next time.

#TheEbook and site updates

What’s good everyone,

So as you know, I’ve been working on an Ebook. The SBM writers playfully call it Detox, because I’ve been writing it since March. If you search that hashtag, you’ll see some of my questions and struggles with the writing process. I just wanted you to get some quick updates:

For one, the book is done. Save for last minute touch-ups, I’ve completed the content. It was a long road, but I made it happen. I’ve fought over changing my pen name from Streetz for book purposes, but I decided to keep the brand name. Maybe if this book thing gets large I’ll use the govt or a combo of the two. We’ll see.

I will be launching it in accordance with my updated design for Streetztalk. We got some things cookin here, and I can’t wait to show you all.

I’ll still be writing about fitness and entertainment here. This site is a reflection of my thoughts and opinions about the world around me, and this will be no different. Since this is a personal site, you’ll get the uncut raw that is my thoughts. I’ll also drop things I find cool here too. This site helped me to grow as a writer, and I don’t want to deter from what made it great. So, you’ll see articles on lifestyle, relationships, sports, wrestling, music, and all my other interests.

I’m not concerned about page views and comments here. This is the white space to my creative process, and if one or many can find appreciation, that’s cool. This is also a place to chronicle my constant fitness journey. I’m big on fitness, love it, and I’m always looking to challenge myself. So you’ll still get that too.

I want to post here more, but life and work got hectic. I have time to step back and really think now, so I’m a little more refreshed and clear as to my overall direction. Once the site is redesigned, I plan to do that 30 posts in 30 days challenge. Exciting times!

Thanks for rocking with the site, and get ready for more things to come!
