#30in30 Day 9: A Few Thoughts On The Loaded Lux vs Calicoe Smack/URL Battle

I love battle rap. I think battles are the foundation of Hip-Hop. They have evolved from the street corners, to on stage in high-priced competition. I don’t actively search them out, but I am a connoisseur of the Smack DVD series and all the battles associated with it. This battle between Loaded Lux and Calicoe was being discussed on my Twitter timeline, and I knew it was a must see. After watching it, I can say it was one of the most entertaining rap battles I have ever seen!  Check the video below. Its ~45 minutes, but trust me it’s worth the watch.

Some of my general thoughts on the battle.

• Loaded Lux came out like this was a stepshow and not a battle. He was dressed in funeral clothes, had people with him dressed in the same attire, handed out programs with Calicoe’s pic, and brought a CASKET onstage(!!). Some say these moves are corny for a battle, but you got to give son credit for creativity.
• I heard some of the dopest quotables out of this battle.
  • “Dying in this ring is a sure thing and you’re the definite”
  • “This is Gods call. Youngin, you gotta learn how this works; JobCor!”
  • “Put the pound on your chin like you talkin on the phone !”
• The phrases “Beloved” “Look at me King” and “You Gon Get This Work” are going to be in the hip hop lexicon ASAP!

All in all it was a great battle and a dope way to hype myself up before sporting events and the gym, lol. My take is Lux 2-1 and I only give Calicoe round 1 because…well, see for yourself.  I’m glad my #30in30 exhibits the flexibility that I will show in my blog going forward.
